What do you like about your role?

I am honored and excited to be part of the conceptualization and execution at JAREE SMITHE. From wireframes to demonstrating the beta versions of our products to clients. I love my role as it indulges me in the involvement of different stages of a start-up. It is demanding, and at times, draining, but I do enjoy seeing to fruition the processes that require tenacity.

 

Share three predictions on the future of Edtech. 

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) materials are going to open a whole new chapter on education content and platforms. The ability to have limitless interaction with elements in our environment is no longer science-fiction but within grasp. AR or VR platforms will become the tools to enhance autonomous learning through discovering objects and concepts that are unknown to us.

 Individualized learning will be more significant than collectively learning. As the education materials prosper through media such as YouTube (that has spawned successful channels such as Khan Academy), Skillshare and Udemy, more options will be available to individuals. Through these options, they can curate appropriate materials suitable to their personal learning methodology.

 Interactive gaming in education meshes both learning objectives and interest retention. It will be a mean that allows permutations for adaptive learning pace.

 

What technologies do you believe have the potential to transform the education industry? 

 AR and VR together with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics. I am cautiously optimistic about the outcome of the amalgamation of the mentioned technologies. I believe it will 'shrink' the world further and allow more real-time learning and exploration to take place via the internet. However, I am aware that the aforementioned amalgamation is an uncharted region and it would be wise to take time to consider possible outcomes and repercussions.


Looking at the key trends over the past 5 years in edtech, what would you say have been the key areas of change that are impacting edtech today? Anything unexpected that surprised you? Trends that were overhyped and never met their expected potential?

Education materials on YouTube have changed the way people learn and gain new knowledge. I think this is a step in the right direction, as people can find further references should they need to revise their newly acquired knowledge. The pioneer of Electronic Learning (E-Learning) which most schools adopted initially fell short of expectations. The static presentation and the repetitive nature of the system took a toll on many users, myself included. I would have liked to have my wrong answers explained and elaborated upon when I made mistakes. Instead, I had only the option of re-attempting the question.

The cumbersome platform felt fragmented and incoherent at times, as if we were using the platform for the sake of being technologically savvy. It set up the ideal environment for the education materials on YouTube to take off, and bridge the gap between learning objectives and users' expectations.

 

Why is it important for all players in the edtech ecosystem to continuously connect, network and learn from each other? 

I think interactions among fellow players within the industry will encourage further innovation and inception of new ideas. At the same time it would be good to have fresh eyes on our ongoing projects and to offer constructive criticism, to allow us to circumvent pitfalls and blind spots.

 

When you think about joining EdTechXAsia this year, what are you looking forward to? What makes you excited about our event in Singapore?

 I am looking forward to hear from my peers and check out new technology that could transform the education sector further and to share JAREE SMITHE‚Äôs approach with the participants.
